WEST POINT, N.Y. — The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team shutout Army, 7-0, in Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday afternoon at Tate Rink.
Holy Cross improves to 11-16-3 (10-10-2 AHA), while the Black Knights fall to 11-15-4 (10-10-2 AHA).
THE GOALTENDERS:
- Crusaders: freshman Louden Hogg – 1-3-0, 24 saves, 1.000 save percentage.
- Black Knights: Gavin Abric – 18 saves, 6 goals allowed, 42:16 minutes played; Evan Szary – 7 saves, 1 goal allowed, 17:44 minutes played.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Senior Nick Hale opened the scoring with four minutes remaining in the first period, netting his second goal of the series. Junior Jack Ricketts sent the puck up from the goal line, finding Hale in the slot. After his first shot was saved, he collected the rebound and sent it past Abric.
- With just over a minute remaining in the frame, freshman Devin Phillips picked up his third power play goal of the season on a one-timer from the right faceoff dot.
- After a highlight reel save by Hogg in the second period, sophomore Liam McLinskey extended the lead to 3-0 on a shot that was redirected by the Army defense into the net.
- Junior Matt Guerra closed the second period with a tip-in goal, before opening the third period with his second of the game. Junior Jack Ricketts took a shot that was saved by Abric, allowing Guerra to collect the rebound and send it in to extend the lead to 5-0.
- 48 seconds later, senior Bobby Young found junior Tyler Ghirardosi open on the right side of the net to bring the score to 6-0. Ghirardosi was able to beat Abric short side, forcing Army to change goalies for the remaining 17 minutes of the game.
- Ricketts forced a turnover in the offensive zone and danced through the defense, creating a lane to rip a wrist shot past Szary to cap the game at 7-0.
BEYOND THE BOX:
- 12 different Crusaders recorded points in the contest, with five of them recording multiple points. Cicero led the way with three assists.
- This was the Crusaders first shutout of the season, and Hogg's first career shutout.
- Holy Cross was 1-for-2 on the power play, while holding Army to 0-for-3 on the man-up advantage with just two shots.
