BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The No. 21 Holy Cross football team overcame an early 14-point deficit to earn a 28-24 Patriot League victory over Lehigh on Saturday, Nov. 4.
Junior running back
Jordan Fuller had a career-best 228 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns, breaking the single-season program record with 18 rushing touchdowns on the year.
Senior wide receiver
Jalen Coker reeled in two touchdowns with 98 receiving yards on the day.
Defensively, senior cornerback
Terrence Spence pulled down an interception and had a team-high seven tackles. Junior linebacker
Frankie Monte finished with six tackles.
The Crusaders (6-3, 4-1 Patriot League) recorded 425 yards of offense while holding the Mountain Hawks (2-7, 1-3 Patriot League) to 294.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Lehigh led 14-0 less than five minutes into the opening quarter. The Mountain Hawks scored on their opening drive, before recovering a Holy Cross fumble at the Crusaders' 29-yard line; Lehigh needed just two passes to score again, with a 22-yard touchdown reception by Eric Johnson putting the Mountain Hawks ahead 14-0 with 10:14 left in the first quarter.
- Fuller ran for a 53-yard touchdown to open the second quarter, cutting the lead to 14-7 just nine seconds into the second.
- Spence picked off a pass by the Mountain Hawks, and after a three-yard run by Fuller, junior quarterback Joe Pesansky connected with Coker for a 34-yard touchdown, evening the score at 14-14 with 12:34 left in the second.
- Lehigh regained the lead at 21-14 with just 1:10 to go in the first half.
- Pesansky and Coker connected again, this time for a 49-yard touchdown, to knot up the game at 21-21 with 19 seconds left in the first half.
- The Mountain Hawks hit a 41-yard field goal to regain the lead, 24-21, with 8:32 remaining in the third quarter.
- After an onside kick, the Crusaders took over at their own 48-yard line. A one-yard touchdown run by Fuller capped off a 10-play drive, giving Holy Cross its first lead of the day at 28-24 with 3:56 left in the third.
- Lehigh missed a field goal attempt with 13:47 left in the fourth quarter. The Crusaders were unable to score on their next drive, but the Holy Cross defense forced a three-and-out, giving the Crusaders the ball back with 6:50 remaining. Holy Cross was able to use an extended drive to run out the clock and take a knee for the 28-24 victory.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Fuller now has 1,026 rushing yards on the season, marking the 12th time in program history that a player has hit the 1,000-rushing yard milestone. His 228 rushing yards are tied for sixth-most in program history.
- Fuller breaks the previous single-season record of 16 rushing touchdowns, which was held by Joe Segreti (1988).
- Coker tied the single-season program record for touchdown receptions, now with 13 on the year.
- Holy Cross has now won six straight games against Lehigh, 15 consecutive Patriot League road games and 19 straight regular-season road games against FCS opponents.
UP NEXT:
- The Crusaders travel to West Point, N.Y., for an FBS matchup against Army on Saturday, Nov. 11.
- Kickoff is scheduled for noon, and the game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.
