Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

10 Crusaders record points in men's ice hockey's win over Brown

WORCESTER, Mass. – Men's ice hockey defeated Brown, 6-3, in non-conference action Friday night at the Hart Center Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders (7-6-2) got on the board early and often in the first period, netting goals at the 9:16, 14:56, and 16:50 marks of the opening frame.
  • Sophomore Matt DeBoer picked up a misplayed puck just in front of the Brown (3-6-0) netminder, sending the puck bar down to put the Crusaders on the board first.
  • On an odd man rush, junior Liam McLinskey dropped a pass to senior Matt Guerra on the wing, who collected the puck and spun it towards the net. Senior Jack Ricketts picked up the free puck, sending it past the outstretched leg of the Bears' netminder.
  • Junior John Gelatt rounded out the scoring for the first period, muscling his way through two Brown defenders before lifting the puck over the leg of the goaltender. Junior Michael Hodge and freshman Connor Welsh were credited with assists on the play, with Welsh's being the first point of his collegiate career.
  • Ricketts opened the scoring in the second period with his second goal of the game at the 3:54 mark of the middle frame. McLinskey drew the defense to the far boards before sending a cross ice pass to an open Guerra beside the net. Guerra drew the goaltender before sending a cross crease feed to Ricketts on the doorstep, tapping the puck in for the 4-0 lead.
  • Brown responded at the 9:06 mark of the frame to end the shutout for senior Jason Grande.
  • The Crusaders responded with a goal of their own 1:25 later with a power play strike by freshman Jack Stockfish. Junior Matt Shatsky sent a stretch pass from the defensive zone to the far blue line, finding DeBoer in stride. DeBoer bumped the puck to an open Stockfish who walked the puck into the zone before firing the puck past the goaltender.
  • Brown netted two four-on-four goals in a 31 second span to cut the Crusader lead to 5-3 4:55 into the third period.
  • With 2:56 remaining, the Bears pulled their goaltender in favor of an extra skater. Holding possession for just under two minutes, Guerra blocked a shot by one of Brown's attackers, picked up the puck and dropped a pass to senior Tyler Ghirardosi, who picked the free puck up in stride. Ghirardosi fired the puck from behind the defensive blue line, sending a perfect strike into the back of the empty net.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Grande recorded 26 saves in the win. The goaltending tandem of Lawton Zacher and Tyler Shea combined for 31 in the loss.
  • Holy Cross outshot Brown, 37-29, while also holding the edge in blocked shots, 18-16.
  • 10 different skaters recorded at least one point in the contest.

UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross will return to action at the Hart Center Rink when they host Niagara for a two game Atlantic Hockey set on Friday, Dec. 1 and Saturday, Dec. 2.
