WORCESTER, Mass.- The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team will host No.12 Vermont for one a night game on Friday Nov. 3 for 2000's music night. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. at Hart Center Rink at Luth Athletic Complex. Fans can stream the broadcast on ESPN+.
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT HOLY CROSS (2-5-1, 1-2-1 Hockey East):
- The Crusaders split the weekend against No. 13 Northeastern this past weekend with the sixth overtime game of the season being played on Friday. Holy Cross pulled out the 1-0 win in OT for their second win in program history, the last time was in 2018. They fell 4-2 to the Huskies in the second game on Saturday.
- In game one, Holy Cross came out strong battling against the nationally ranked Huskies away. After a scoreless three period the game was sent into overtime. The Crusaders were on the power-play in their attacking zone when they won the faceoff and senior forward Lilly Feeney fed sophomore forward Alexis Perry who netted the game winner at 3:13 to end the game and earn the Crusaders their first win over the Huskies in five years.
- A great performance from the Crusaders defense with freshman forward Emily Crovo blocking four shots and junior Emma Min with three blocks in the game.
- The star of Holy Cross's defense was senior goalie Madison Beck who had an outstanding outing between the pipes. Beck earned her second career shutout and a season high of 40 saves on the outing.
- In game two, Northeastern got on the board first but the Crusaders were quick to answer back with Perry converting on a power-play two minutes later to tie the game at 1-1 to end the period. She was assisted by sophomore defensemen Casey Borgiel and Alexia Moreau. Five minutes into the second period the Huskies reclaimed the lead. Once again Holy Cross replied with a goal by sophomore forward Lane Lewis at 7:39 to conclude the period 2-2. She was assisted by senior defenseman Grace Johnson and senior forward Millie Sirum. Late in the third period, Northeastern stole the lead back on a power-play goal and the Crusaders pulled their goalie as a last ditch effort to equalize the score. Unfortunately Holy Cross came up short with the Huskies gaining possession of the puck and scoring an empty net goal on the power-play for the 4-2 final score.
- Beck was named Hockey East Stop It Goaltender of the Week for her performance in both games for the second week in a row. She had a total of 73 saves on the weekend and earned her second career shutout. She now has a 1.78 goals against average and a .944 save percentage this season.
- Perry also received a nod from the league being named as a Hockey East Top Performer this week for scoring the game winner in the first game of the series and netting a goal in game two against No. 13 Northeastern. Currently she is Holy Cross's leading scorer with four goals on the season and tied with Sirum for most points with six a piece.
- Borgiel and Moreau lead the Crusaders with the most assists with five each. Junior Carmen Elliott leads the team with the 14 blocks. Min follows her with 13 of her own this season.
CATCHING UP WITH THE CATAMOUNTS (5-2-1, 4-0-0 Hockey East):
- Vermont concluded the 2022-23 season with a 22-11-3 overall record and 16-8-3 conference record. The Catamounts finished in 2nd place in the Hockey East and made it to the quarterfinals of the Hockey East Tournament. They fell to third seeded Providence in a close 1-0 loss.
- The Catamounts are on a four game win streak and are currently undefeated in Hockey East play. The two losses came from nationally ranked No. 9 Clarkson on Oct. 6 at home and No. 11 St. Lawrence away on Oct. 14. Vermont managed to come to a tie with #9 Clarkson on Oct. 7 for their second game of the series ending overtime with a 2-2 score. The Catamounts came out with the 2-1 shootout victory.
- Last weekend Oct. 27-28, Vermont swept New Hampshire in a two-game conference series at home. The Catamounts came out with the 6-3 win on Friday with senior Natálie Mlýnková earning a hat trick going 3-for-4 in shots in the competition. Junior Alaina Tanski, fifth year Hailey Burns and freshman Rose-Marie Brochu scored the other three goals for the win.
- Brochu netted the equalizing goal with 47 seconds left in the first period to tie the score at 1-1. New Hampshire scored 29 seconds into the second period to reclaim the lead. Mlýnková evened the score with a short handed goal three minutes later for the 2-2 result. The Wildcats converted on a power-play to go up a goal at 4:28. Mlýnková once again tied the game with an unassisted goal at 8:49 to end the second period 3-3. Tanski scored 56 seconds into the third period for the game winner. Mlýnková and Burns added on some insurance goals to secure the 6-3 win.
- Burns, Tanski, sophomore Lara Beecher, freshman Hailey Eikos, sophomore Krista Parkkonen, fifth year Lily Humphrey, freshman Natalie Zacone, senior Bella Parento and freshman Kaylee Lewis all earned assists on the Catamounts goals in game one.
- In game two of the series, Mlýnková netted the first goal of the game at 5:46 in the third period. New Hampshire equalized at 13:48 to send the game into overtime. Junior Evelyn Blais-Savorie converted on a power-play at 3:31 to take the 2-1 OT win for the Catamounts. She was assisted by Mlýnková and Parkkonen.
- Mlýnková's five point (4G, 1A) performance on the weekend earned her Hockey East Player of the Week honors. She is the Catamounts leading scorer with six goals, tied with Parkkonen for the most assists with five and has the most points with 11 on the season so far.
- Senior goalie Jessie McPherson is Vermont's go-to choice in net. She made 43 saves in a weekend sweep of New Hampshire. She made 21 saves on Friday to secure a 6-3 win for Vermont. McPherson then added 22 saves in Vermont's 2-1 overtime win to propel the Catamounts to 4-0-0 in conference play to begin the year. She was given a nod by the league being named as a Hockey East Top Performer this week. McPherson now has a .67 goals against average and a .973 save percentage.
- Fifth year Sara Levesque leads the Catamounts in blocks with 26. She is followed by Parkkonen who has 17 blocks this season.
LAST TIME THEY MET:
- Holy Cross and Vermont faced each other three times last season with Holy Cross splitting the first two-games taking the first matchup 2-1 and dropping the second 3-0. The Catamounts last hosted the Crusaders for their final matchup of the season with Vermont earning the 3-1 win over the Crusaders to add to the Catamounts two game win streak.
- Holy Cross holds a 3-10-1 all-time series and 3-7-1 all-time conference record against Vermont.
