BALTIMORE – The Holy Cross volleyball team was upended 3-0 by Patriot League opponent Loyola (Md.) Sunday afternoon in Reitz Arena.
With the win, the Greyhounds move to 8-10 and 3-5 in league play while Holy Cross lost for the 14th time while they are still searching for their first league win. Â
Sophomore
Rachel Johnson tallied a team-best 10 kills and led the squad with eight digs. Junior
Abbie Lane added five kills, six digs and two assists in the defeat.
SET SCORES:
- Greyhounds 3, Crusaders 0 (19-25, 14-25, 11-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Trailing 6-1 early, the Crusaders came within one after a Lane kill. Behind by three, 9-6 the Crusaders notched five consecutive markers including a Lane ace to make it 11-9 in favor of the Crusaders. A 6-1 burst by the hosts moved the ahead 15-12. Lane converted another attack attempt for a kill to drop the deficit to 18-17, Loyola closed out the set 7-2 for the victory.
- Back-to-back attack errors by the Greyhounds put the Crusaders in the lead at 4-3. With the set tied 5-5 Loyola used a 9-4 scoring binge to lead 14-9. Ahead by four, the home team scored the final seven points to take a 2-0 match lead.
- Loyola started off with a 6-1 start to the third set. They got a service ace to double up the margin at 14-7. Holding a 14-9 lead, the Greyhounds put home 10 consecutive to ice the set.
INSIDE THE BOX:
- Johnson has recorded double-digit kills in three straight matches and six times over the last seven games.
- Halle Carter was two assists and one dig shy of her second consecutive double-double.
UP NEXT:
- Holy Cross returns home on Saturday, Oct. 14 to square off against conference opponent Bucknell.
- First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
