WORCESTER, Mass – The Holy Cross field hockey team shutout Lehigh, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at the Hart Turf Field.
Â
The two teams played even in the first quarter, with the Crusaders (4-7, 1-3 PL) outshooting the Mountain Hawks (8-4, 2-1 PL) 4-3, despite Lehigh holding a 3-1 edge in penalty corners.
Â
Senior
Allie McDonough found the back of the net in the second quarter to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead going into the half. McDonough received a pass from fellow senior
Sarah Potter, made a quick touch around the goalkeeper, and buried the score.
Â
Potter scored a goal of her own just over two minutes into the fourth quarter, tipping a pass across the goal by freshman
Maguire Sturgis into the corner of the net. With just over eight minutes remaining, junior
Meggan Fourie extended the lead to 3-0 on a reverse chip that went just out of the goalkeeper's reach.
Â
Sophomore
Megan Schienbein and senior
Haley Davis combined for three defensive saves to help keep the shutout in tact.
Â
Senior
Brooke Ross finished the afternoon in goal with 12 saves and the win, while Lehigh's Jenny Canoni had nine saves.
Â
The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, October 10, when they welcome Queens College (N.C.) to The Hill at 11 a.m.
