WORCESTER, Mass. - Five different Crusaders scored in field hockey's decisive 6-1 win over Merrimack on Tuesday afternoon at the Hart Turf Field.
Senior
Sarah Potter opened the scoring for Holy Cross (3-7) 50 seconds into the opening frame on a penalty corner, assisted by sophomore
Megan Schienbein. Despite having a penalty stroke called back, senior
Haley Davis converted on the following penalty corner, assisted by fellow senior
Katie Guden.
Guden and Davis would connect again in the second quarter, with Davis taking the stick stop this time to set up a shot by Guden that sailed past the Warriors netminder into the back of the net.
Merrimack scored their lone goal of the contest 1:12 into the third quarter, but the cut into the lead would not last long as Potter converted her second goal of the afternoon off a pass by freshman
Marissa MacLean 27 seconds later. MacLean's assist was the first point of her collegiate career.
The Crusaders tacked on two more goals before the end of the quarter on a tipped shot on a corner from Schienbein to junior
Meggan Fourie, and a shot by senior
Allie McDonough off a pass by freshman
Maguire Sturgis.
Freshman goalkeeper
Madison Clark made her collegiate debut in the fourth quarter, recording one save in her 15 minutes of work.
Senior goalkeeper
Brooke Ross made three saves in the win, while the trio of Merrimack goalkeepers recorded ten in the loss.
Field hockey returns to action Saturday morning when it welcomes Lehigh to the Hart Turf Field at 11 a.m. Saturday's matchup will also serve as the program's Alumni Appreciation Game.
