Men's ice hockey falls to RIT in overtime

Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team fell to RIT, 3-2, in overtime Friday night at the Hart Center Rink.

The two teams finished the first period with no score despite the Tigers (3-2-0, 2-1-0 AHA) outshooting the Crusaders (4-1-1, 1-1-1 AHA) 15-5.

RIT got on the board first halfway through the second period on an even strength goal. RIT would take the 1-0 lead into the third period.

Senior Jack Ricketts tied the game at the 14:10 mark of the third period with a power play strike. Junior Michael Hodge dug the puck out of a scrum in the corner, finding junior Liam McLinskey at the blue line. McLinskey unleashed a wrist shot towards the net, which Ricketts was able to redirect past the RIT netminder.

The Crusaders scored again a minute later, though after a coaches' challenge by RIT, the goal was overturned and Holy Cross was sent on a five-minute penalty kill. Just over three minutes into the penalty kill, junior John Gelatt gave the Crusaders the lead with a shorthanded strike. The tic-tac-toe goal, set up by McLinskey, saw him pass the puck from the left post to junior Nic Petruolo in front of the cage, where he bumped the puck to an open Gelatt on the right post for the one-time score.

The shorthanded goal was the tenth special teams' goal for the Crusaders, who have now tallied three shorthanded strikes on the young season, lead Atlantic Hockey and are tied for second nationally in special teams' goals.

RIT tied the game with 5:18 remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime. After chances on both sides, the Tigers found the back of the net with 1:20 left in the extra period.

Senior netminder Jason Grande recorded 39 saves in the loss, while RIT's Tommy Scarfone posted 27 in the win.

The two teams will faceoff again tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 28. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
