Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Crusaders battle with BC to tough 2-1 result

WORCESTER, Mass. — The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team opened its Hockey East schedule hosting Boston College in game one of their two-game set. The Crusaders took an early lead in the first period scoring just five minutes into play. BC answered with a power-play goal later in the period to tie things 1-1. The Eagles took the 2-1 win after scoring eight minutes into the third period

The Crusdaers kicked things off scoring early in the first period with a goal by sophomore forward Lane Lewis at the 5:28 mark. She was assisted by senior defenseman Grace Johnson and senior forward Millie Sirum. The Eagles replied with an equalizing goal of their own on the power-play advantage to tie the game 1-1 at 16:26.

After a scoreless second period and both sides battling for the lead, Boston College netted the go-ahead goal immediately after the puck was dropped in a faceoff at 8:23. The Crusaders continued to fight until the final seconds but just fell short to lose the game 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Holy Cross struck first with a goal by Lewis at 5:38 in the first period. The Eagles responded with a power-play goal at 16:26 to tie the game
  • Neither team scored in the second period 
  • Boston College scored the winning goal at 8:23 in the third period
  • Holy Cross and Boston College in shot attempts, 37-28

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Lewis scored her second goal of the season
  • Johnson had her first assist of the year
  • Sirum made her second assist this season
  • Bryn Saarela and Emilie Fortunato each made two blocks a piece on the outing
  • Madison Beck made a season high of 26 saves to 28 shots faced on the day.

UP NEXT: 

  • Holy Cross will travel to Boston College to resume their two-game set on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass. at 2 p.m.
