STORRS, Conn. – The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team shutout UConn in game two of the series, 2-0, to complete the home-and-home sweep at the Toscano Family Ice Forum on Saturday night.
The two teams skated to a scoreless tie in the first period with UConn (1-2-1) slightly outshooting Holy Cross (3-0-0), 9-6.
Freshman
Jack Stockfish broke the tie 2:52 into the second period, netting his first collegiate goal as a Crusader. An errant pass by the Huskies defense in the Crusaders' offensive zone found the stick of sophomore
Matt DeBoer who was able to turn the play back around towards the net. Pinning the defender, DeBoer found a wide-open Stockfish who sent the puck into the top right corner of the net.
The third period brought even offense from both sides, with the Huskies taking the slight edge in shots, 8-6. It wasn't until one minute remaining in the third that junior
Liam McLinskey sent the puck out of the zone towards the empty UConn net. The puck sailed just wide, though senior
Jack Ricketts beat out the icing for the easy tap in to extend the lead to 2-0.
Senior netminder
Jason Grande recorded 28 saves in the shutout, while UConn's Ethan Haider posted 15 in the loss. The Holy Cross defense recorded 16 blocked shots.
The last time that Holy Cross began a season 3-0 was in the 2012-2013 season when they defeated AIC, Clarkson, and UConn to begin the campaign.
The Crusaders will open their Atlantic Hockey schedule next weekend when they travel to newly reinstated Robert Morris for a two-game set on Friday, Oct. 20, and Saturday, Oct. 21. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, and 5 p.m. on Saturday.
