WORCESTER, Mass – The Holy Cross field hockey team recorded its third-straight shutout, 4-0, against Patriot League opponent Colgate University on Friday afternoon at the Hart Turf Field.
The two teams played even through the first quarter before the Crusaders (6-7, 2-3 PL) drew a penalty stroke opportunity 8:48 into the second quarter. Senior
Haley Davis netted the one-on-one opportunity, giving the Crusaders the 1-0 lead.
The Crusaders scored two more goals on the ensuing five-minute extra player opportunity. Freshman
Maguire Sturgis took a self-start from just under the 23-meter line, dribbling five yards to the right before unleashing an opposite corner shot into the back of the cage. Sophomore
Coley Leo knocked home a rebound off a Sturgis shot to extend the lead to 3-0. Leo's goal was the first of her collegiate career.
Senior
Sarah Potter picked up her sixth goal in four games at the 12:50 mark of the fourth quarter. Davis sent a shot into the circle from outside the 23-meter line which senior
Allie McDonough bumped away from the defense. Potter took a running start towards the ball, sweeping it past the Colgate (3-9, 0-4 PL) netminder.
Senior
Brooke Ross made seven saves on the afternoon, while the Raiders' Hayley Campbell recorded 15 saves in the loss.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 12 p.m. when they travel to Patriot League foe American University.
