WORCESTER, Mass. — The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team tied Clarkson University, 1-1, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center.
The Golden Knights move to 9-8-3, while the Crusaders move to 5-13-2.
THE GOALTENDERS:
- Crusaders: junior Jason Grande - 4-3-1, 28 saves, .905 save percentage.
- Golden Knights: Ethan Haider – 9-8-2, 29 saves, .909 save percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The two teams played even in the first period, with the Crusaders leading in shots on goal, 8-7.
- The scoreless tie held through the second period.
- Holy Cross held Clarkson to one shot through two powerplay opportunities in the second frame.
- The Golden Knights broke the ice with 10:24 remaining in the third period. A stretch pass by Trey Taylor found Ryan Richardson alone in the offensive zone, where he was able to slip a shot past Grande.
- Freshman Mack Oliphant scored his first career goal with 1:19 remaining in regulation to tie the game. A passing sequence by freshman Devin Phillips and senior Bobby Young opened up space for Oliphant to streak down the right side for the strike.
- Clarkson out-shot the Crusaders 3-1 in the overtime period, before the game progressed to a best-of-three shootout. Clarkson then took the shootout, 2-0.
BEYOND THE BOX:
- The Crusaders held the edge in blocked shots, 18-8.
- Clarkson held a slim lead in faceoff wins, 30-27.
UP NEXT:
- The Crusaders return to AHA action on Friday, January 13 at the Hart Center, when they welcome Air Force for a two-game set.
- Friday's matchup will be Mighty Ducks Night, with a jersey raffle and references to the franchise throughout the game.
- Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
