Women's hockey set to face No. 7 Northeastern

WORCESTER, Mass. — The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team concludes their road series at No. 7 Northeastern for the third and final meeting between these programs this season. Puck drop is slated for 6 p.m. on Jan. 27 at Matthews Arena.
 
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE CRUSADERS (5-20-1, 4-16-0 Hockey East): 
  • Senior Mary Edmonds set a career season-high in goals (8) with her latest goal against then-No. 11 Vermont on Friday. She tallied an assist against the Merrimack Warriors on Saturday, bringing her point total to a team-high 13. Edmonds has tallied eight points in her last eight games.
  • Senior Sofia Smithson and junior Bryn Saarela both recorded a single game career-high three points against Merrimack on Saturday. Smithson tallied three assists to aid the Crusaders to a 5-1 victory. She holds the team-high in assists with eight and the third highest point total with 11. Saarela posted one goal and two assists against the Warriors. She brings her season point total to 12, from five goals and seven assists. 
  • Freshman Alexia Moreau recorded the last goal of the game on Saturday. She owns the team's second highest goal total with six.
  • Senior defenseman Kailey Langefels logged two assists against the Warriors, bringing her season total to seven. She owns the most points of any defender with eight. She was recognized as Hockey East Army ROTC Defender of the Week for her standout performance.
  • Junior goaltender Madison Beck has spent the majority of the season in between the pipes for the Crusaders. She owns 549 saves, a .924 save percentage and a goals-against average of 2.50 after 19 games. Beck earned Hockey East Stop It Goaltending Goaltender of the Week for her performance in goal on Saturday. 
  • The Holy Cross penalty kill unit has held strong in recent weeks. In their last six contests, the Crusaders have killed 19 of 21 power play attempts, including six chances from Merrimack on Saturday.
  • The Crusaders' defense has remained consistent with a high volume of blocked shots. They rank first in Hockey East with a total of 332 and an average of 12.77 blocks per game. Sophomore defenseman Emma Min leads the team with 40. She is closely followed by Langefels (39) and sophomore defender Carmen Elliott (38).
  • The Crusaders are one win away of tying the program record for most wins in Hockey East play since joining the conference for the 2018-19 season.
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE HUSKIES (23-2-1, 19-2-1 Hockey East): 
  • No. 7 Northeastern is coming off a two-win weekend against Hockey East opponents Merrimack and then-No. 11 Vermont. The Huskies beat to the Warriors 3-1 on Friday, followed by a 3-1 win against the Catamounts on Saturday. 
  • Senior Katy Knoll, graduate student Chloé Aurard and graduate student Maureen Murphy each tallied a multiple-point weekend. 
  • Knoll leads the Huskies in goals (17), with five two-goal games this season.
  • Graduate student Alina Mueller holds the team-high in points (38) and assists (22). She tallied her most recent points against Maine with three assists on Jan. 14.
  • Senior goalie Gwyneth Philips has spent the majority of the season in goal for the Huskies. Philips owns a goals-against average of 0.81 and a save percentage of .959. She has tallied 497 saves in 26 starts.
LAST TIME THEY MET:
  • These programs have met twice for a home-and-home weekend series on Nov. 18 and 19. 
  • In the first matchup, the Crusaders fell just shy to the then-No. 7/8 Huskies, 2-1. Freshman Casey Borgiel posted the lone goal for Holy Cross, while Fortunato and Smithson recorded assists.
  • The following day, Holy Cross lost to Northeastern 5-2, with four Huskies owning two-point performances. 
  • Beck posted 38 saves in the first contest and 36 in the second. Philips made 23 saves in the first game and 19 the following day.
