IRVINE, Calif. - The Holy Cross volleyball team wrapped up their west coast swing with a pair of setbacks Saturday at the UCI/Adidas Invitational both by 3-0 scores to nonconference foes Sacred Heart and Dartmouth. Senior
Emma VanSeveren was named to the All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the invitational.
VanSeveren totaled 30 digs, nine assists and two aces for Holy Cross. The defeats send the Crusaders to 1-6 on the year while the Pioneers and Big Green improve to 2-4 and 2-0 respectively.
MATCH ONE SET SCORES:
- Pioneers 3, Crusaders 0 (18-25, 22-25, 16-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Sacred Heart built up a 5-0 lead early in the match. Trailing by five, three straight kills, two from sophomore Lauren Halverson and one by freshman Rachel Johnson pulled Holy Cross within two, 8-6. VanSeveren placed an ace to level the margin, 10-10. A junior Sanaea Simmons and Johnson dual block gave the Crusaders their first lead at 12-11. The teams swapped points and a sophomore Abbie Lane kill set up by freshman Katie Russell put the Crusaders down one, 19-18. The Pioneers put together six straight points to close out the first set.
- The Pioneers jumped in front 5-0 again in the second set. Holy Cross countered with a 7-1 binge with Russell serving. The Holy Cross lead built to 13-11 following an attack error. Five consecutive markers leapfrogged Sacred Heart back into the lead 16-13. Lane placed an ace to slash the deficit to one, but the Pioneers closed the set strong.
- A double block by Sacred Heart moved their squad ahead 6-2 in the third set. A Halverson kill brought it to a two point set, 10-8. Holy Cross kept chipping away and got a senior Peyton Dewers ace for the 16-13 deficit. The Crusaders amassed only three more points in the match.
INSIDE THE BOX:
- Lane and Johnson had the team lead with eight kills apiece. Lane was two kills shy of a double-double (11 digs).
- Halverson hit .300 in the match for the Crusaders, a team-best.
- Russell set a new career-high with three aces.
- Camryn Luginbuhl nearly had a triple-double (12 kills, 8 digs, 6 blocks).
- Sacred Heart outhit and outblocked the Crusaders.
MATCH TWO SET SCORES:
- Big Green 3, Crusaders 0 (12-25, 8-25, 15-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Back-to-back attack errors moved the lead to 4-2 for the Crusaders. A Lane mash steadied the score at 5-3. With Holy Cross up by one, Dartmouth took a sizeable lead, 13-8 thanks to a 7-1 sprint. Halverson and Benck teamed up for a block putting the Crusaders down three, 14-11. From that point on the Big Green closed out the set out producing the Crusaders 11-1.
- Johnson killed off a set by Russell for the Crusaders opening score of the second set. Dartmouth dumped in nine consecutive points for the 9-1 advantage. Amelia Gibbs gave the Big Green an 11-point lead at 17-6. Dartmouth won the set 25-8.
- Dartmouth manufactured six in a row in the third set for the 6-0 edge. Lane stopped the run smashing an attack attempt to the court for a kill. The Big Green built a nine-point lead late hanging on for the sweep.
INSIDE THE BOX:
- Lane has notched seven or more kills over the past three matches.
- Benck hit a team-best .273.
- Johnson's 10 digs were the second time she recorded double figures this season.
- Dartmouth had a balanced attack with seven players tallying four or more kills.
