Holy Cross mourns the loss of Janet Hourihan Brooks ‘86

College of the Holy Cross alumna and women's basketball legend Janet Hourihan Brooks '86 passed away on Monday, Sept. 19 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Hourihan competed on Crusader teams which compiled an overall record of 81-27, including an EAIAW championship, a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship and a 1985 bid to the NCAA Tournament.

She ranks second all-time at Holy Cross in rebounds (1,178) and fourth in points scored (1,909), and was the first player in program history to record over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

Hourihan was inducted into the Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1991. This January, her jersey is one of five that will be retired and displayed in the rafters of the Hart Center Arena. 

She is survived by her husband, Bill Brooks; her two children, Dan and Ryan; her two stepchildren, Joe and Mike; her mother, Clare; and five brothers and sisters.

A wake will be held Friday, Sept. 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Saints Constantine & Helen Parish Center (37 Lake Parkway, Webster, Mass.) with visiting hours on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 10 to 11:15 a.m. at George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home (1305 Highland Ave., Needham, Mass.). 

A funeral mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. at Saint Joseph Church (1382 Highland Ave, Needham, Mass.). Burial will be private.
