Field hockey defeats Merrimack

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's field hockey team downed the Merrimack Warriors, 7-3.

The win sends the Crusaders to 2-6 and the Warriors to 0-7 on the season. Sophomore forward Meggan Fourie and senior midfielder Emily Dionne led the night with two goals each.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Just 0:14 into the first quarter, Fourie found the back of the cage with an assist from senior defender Gabby Venezia.
  • At 2:49 of the first quarter, Merrimack's Autumn Bartush fired a shot past junior goaltender Brooke Ross to tie the score 1-1.
  • Fourie's second goal of the evening came at 7:38 of the first quarter when she scored off of a penalty corner attempt with an assist from junior midfielder Ryleigh McComas.
  • At 10:18 of the first quarter, Dionne scored her first goal of the season with an assist from senior midfielder Sinead Walsh, bringing the count to 3-1 in favor of Holy Cross.
  • The lone goal of the second quarter came from freshman forward Julia Carrozza at 8:31.
  • Merrimack's Cate Buecker kicked off the third quarter with a goal at 2:26 bringing the score to 4-2, Holy Cross.
  • Dionne's second goal of the evening came just moments later at 2:51 of the third quarter, pushing the Crusaders ahead by three.
  • Junior midfielder Katie Guden capitalized on a penalty corner with an assist from Walsh at 5:56 of the third quarter.
  • Merrimack's final goal of the evening came from Lauren Burke off of a penalty stroke at 10:56 of the third quarter.
  • Venezia rounded out the evening with another successful corner attempt assisted by McComas at 12:43 of the fourth quarter, leaving the final score at 7-3.
 
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
  • After being out for the first six games of the season, Dionne scored the first two goals of her career in the contest.
  • Carrozza's goal marked not only the first of her collegiate career but also the first goal scored by a freshman this season.
  • Senior goaltender Emma Lauber made her season debut for the Crusaders spending the final quarter of the game in the cage.
  • The last time the Crusaders scored seven goals in a game was in 2007 when they defeated Siena 7-1.

  • The Crusaders will make the drive East to Boston where they will face the Boston University Terriers on Sept. 24 at 1 p.m.
