Women's soccer ties with Siena on first road trip

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. — The Holy Cross women's soccer team tied nonconference opponent Siena, 2-2, in a matinee matchup on Sunday, Aug. 21. Junior defender Francesca Ciatto scored her first goal of the season in the 76th minute to give the Crusaders their second straight draw.

The Crusaders move to 0-0-2 and the Saints to 0-1-1 through the first two games of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the 15th minute, Siena was awarded a corner kick that ultimately turned into the first scoring play of the afternoon, as Annie Bagnall snuck one past senior goalkeeper Izzy Castagnetti to give the Saints an early advantage.
  • The Crusaders responded with a quick shot on goal that was stopped by Saints goalkeeper Angela Fini. The Saints managed to fire off a couple more shots in return that were all turned away by Castagnetti.
  • Holy Cross evened the score around with a team goal in the 27th minute. After a shot by sophomore defender Alyssa Pettet was off target, play continued and the ball hit off a Siena player and made its way past Fini.
  • A yellow card and a foul on the Crusaders led to a penalty kick attempt by Bagnall. The attempt was successful, and the Saints brought the score to 2-1.
  • The second half started off quiet offensively, with only one shot on goal for each team until Ciatto tied the game up at two goals apiece, assisted by Samantha Adams.
  • Siena put forth a solid push in the final minutes, but Holy Cross' defense kept the Saints at bay to secure the Crusaders' second tie on the year.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
  • Castagnetti made three saves in her first game of the season.
  • Ciatto's goal was the first of her career.
  • Holy Cross moves to 11-8-3 all time against Siena.
UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross is back at home against Fairfield (1-0-0) on Thursday, August 25.
  • Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
