WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior
Avery LaBarbera, a member of the Holy Cross women's basketball team, has been selected as the 2021-2022 Crusader of the Year. The most prestigious student-athlete award presented by the Holy Cross Varsity Club, the Crusader of the Year goes to a senior who has excelled not only in varsity athletics, but also in the classroom and the community, and has been prominent in campus activities.
A two-year team captain, LaBarbera started all 31 of the Crusaders' games as a senior and was named the Patriot League Player of the Year. She averaged 16.4 points, 9.8 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game in 2021-2022 to rank third in the Patriot League in scoring and rebounding, while standing fifth in assists. An All-Patriot League selection during each of her four seasons, LaBarbera finished her career with 1,478 points, 660 rebounds, 364 assists and 173 steals, and is the all-time program leader in career free throw percentage (86.5 percent).
In the classroom, LaBarbera carries a 3.11 grade point average with a major in political science, and was a two-time selection to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. She is also a member of the Holy Cross Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a volunteer with Girls, Inc., and a co-chair of the senior class gift committee.
