GAME ONE
Army 7, Holy Cross 0

STATS LEADERS:
Holy Cross:

Cooney (two walks, stolen base)
Ambrosino (1.0 IP, no hits, strikeout)

Army:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After three scoreless innings, Army broke the deadlock with a solo home run from third baseman Sam Ruta. Later in the frame, a two-run homer extended the lead to 3-0 in favor of the Black Knights.
  • Aided by a three-run homer from Ross Friedrick, Army used a four-run fifth inning to push its lead to 7-0.
  • The Crusaders drew five walks against Army starter Connelly Early and also reached on a catcher's interference, but Holy Cross was unable to record a hit until the top of the sixth inning. Freshman third baseman Nick Wang led off the frame with a walk, and advanced to third after senior first baseman Nate Wolf had a base hit. However, the Crusaders could not push any runs across.
  • Sophomore right-hander Jack Ambrosino threw a hitless sixth inning to prevent any more scoring by the Black Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Army put up seven runs in the bottom of the first to jump out to a commanding lead early, and tacked on two more runs in the third to lead 9-0.
  • Wang doubled to lead off the fourth inning, and advanced to third on a groundout. Wolf hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Wang for the Crusaders' first run of the day.
  • Army immediately got the run back when Cam Cerruto led off the bottom of the fourth with his second home run of the contest.
  • Sophomore left fielder Patrick Casserly singled to open the fifth, and he came around to score after senior catcher Angelo D'Acunto doubled down the left-field line. Freshman shortstop Jimmy King singled through the middle, scoring another run and bringing the Crusaders within 10-3.
  • After King's single, freshman center fielder Tyler Mudd had a base hit and Wang drew a walk to load up the bases with just one out. King scored after a failed pickoff attempt; Scanlon walked, loading the bases again. Wolf drew a walk to bring the Crusaders within 10-5.
  • Army threatened in the bottom of the fifth, loading up the bases with just one out, but the Crusaders turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
  • D'Acunto singled in the sixth and then advanced to third after a wild pitch and a stolen base; he scored on a groundout, bringing the Crusaders within 10-6. Wang's second double of the day scored King, who had previously reached on a walk, to make it a 10-7 game.
  • Three runs came across for the Black Knights in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead to 13-7.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • With two doubles on the day, Wang now has 16 on the season. He is now inside the top 10 in program history for doubles in a single season; he is tied with five other Crusaders for fifth place all-time.
  • Ambrosino has not conceded any runs in four appearances this season.
DUE UP:
  • The Crusaders and Black Knights are scheduled to round out the weekend series with a doubleheader on Sunday, April 3.
