BU collects Saturday softball sweep

BOSTON – The Holy Cross softball team suffered two setbacks on Saturday afternoon to Patriot League opponent Boston University. The Crusaders fell by an 8-0 score in five innings during game one and 4-0 in game two at the BU Softball Field.

Holy Cross (13-25, 3-8 PL) was no-hit in game one by BU (29-13, 8-0) hurler Lizzy Avery, which was her second no-no of the season. The Crusaders managed two hits in game two, however, a four run bottom of the fourth was all the runs the Terriers needed.

GAME ONE: TERRIERS 8, CRUSADERS 0 (FINAL – 5 INN.):

IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Lizzy Avery: W (13-8), no-hitter, four strikeouts, three walks.
  • Senior Kelly Nelson: L (9-13), 3.0 innings, five earned runs, two hits allowed, three walks two strikeouts.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Jen Horita: 2-for-3, triple, four RBI, two runs scored.
  • Nicole Amodio: 1-for-2, two RBI, walk.
  • Caitlin Coker: 1-for-3, run scored, double.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • BU got on the board in the home half of the third. A one out walk followed by a Coker double off the right field fence put runners at second and third. Lauren Keleher flew out to center for the sacrifice fly and the 1-0 Terrier lead. They loaded the bases with two outs and Horita tripled to right center clearing the bases. She came dashing home on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.
  • In the fifth, the hosts added three runs off two singles to complete the run-rule win.

  • Yurchick got the first hit of the ballgame for the Crusaders in the top of the fifth legging out an infield single to short. A fielding error put another runner on the base, but the last batter of the inning grounded out to end the inning.
