Softball to play in Rutgers Tournament this weekend

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team competes in their final scheduled weekend tournament this season on Saturday and Sunday at the Rutgers Tournament in Piscataway, N.J.

SCHEDULE:
  • vs. Fairfield (4-10, 0-0 NEC) – Saturday, March 19 – 9:00 a.m.
  • at Rutgers (17-10, 0-0 B1G) – Saturday, March 19 – 1:30 p.m.
  • vs. Stony Brook (9-7, 0-0 AE) – Sunday, March 20 – 11:15 a.m.
  • vs. St. Peter's (10-8, 0-0 MAAC) – Sunday, March 20 – 1:30 p.m.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT HOLY CROSS (5-10, 0-0 PL):
  • Holy Cross enters the weekend set on a two game winning streak defeating Siena 5-2 last Saturday and Niagara 5-4 last Sunday morning. Against Siena, senior catcher Erin Bengston bashed two home runs for four RBI in the win while sophomore Jessica Mott belted a walk-off single in a 3-for-5, three RBI showing versus Niagara.
  • Senior pitcher Kelly Nelson was selected Patriot League honorable mention on Tuesday afternoon. Nelson tossed 31.2 innings in five starts for the Crusaders this past week. Collecting three wins, she had a 2.43 ERA and four complete games with 29 strikeouts and a .211 batting average against.
  • Junior Kari Jacobson slashed .357/.357/.357 with one run scored and a stolen base across all six games last week for the Crusaders. In the 5-2 win against Siena, Jacobson set a personal-high with four hits going 4-for-4 with a steal in the Holy Cross win.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSING TEAMS:
  • Fairfield has lost three straight contests including a 4-3 setback to St. John's on Wednesday. Haley Updegraff had a pair of base knocks in the loss and raised her team-leading batting average to .333. She has multiple hit games in three of her last four contests and four duels with two or more hits this season.
  • Rutgers is currently in sixth place in the B1G. After beating the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) 16-0 in game one on Thursday, they suffered a 4-3 loss to the Hawks. In game one, junior southpaw Jaden Vickers tossed the program's first no-hitter since 2012 fanning seven batters in the run rule victory.
  • Stony Brook holds a 9-7 record on the season and has lost four of their last five games including a 6-0 loss to Fordham on Wednesday. Corinne Badger has a .311/.373/.844 triple slash line with a team-leading eight home runs, 17 RBI, and a 1.217 OPS.
  • St. Peter's has lost three in a row with a 6-0 defeat to Wagner happening in their last game. Cara McNulty is the standout offensive threat for the Peacocks hitting .370 with a .991 OPS, five doubles, a team-best two homers and 12 RBI across 18 starts.
