HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Jack DiLauro struck out four batters through his first two innings of work, but the Spiders finally broke through in the third inning. After a walk and two hit batters to load the bases, Alden Mathes singled to right field and Dominic Toso grounded out to drive in another run, making it a 2-0 game.
  • Holy Cross got on the board in the top of the sixth; freshman first baseman Brendan Jones singled to lead off the frame and moved to third after senior catcher Angelo D'Acunto singled up the middle. Junior designated hitter Jordan Petrushka used a sacrifice bunt to score Jones, bringing the Crusaders within 2-1.
  • With a runner on third base and only one out in the seventh inning, the Crusaders threw out the runner at home for the second out. However, Richmond still managed to scrape across an insurance run with a two-out single by Mathes in the seventh.
  • After a misthrow by Toso at third base in the eighth inning, Jones scored on the error to bring Holy Cross within 3-2. Freshman center fielder Tyler Mudd then beat out a throw to first to drive in sophomore right fielder Jake McElroy, evening the score at 3-3.
  • Freshman third baseman Nick Wang led off the top of the ninth with a double, and moved to third after a sacrifice bunt by freshman left fielder Connor Cooney. Jones hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Wang, and in the next at-bat, McElroy hit a solo home run to left-center, extending the Holy Cross lead to 5-3.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Richmond singled and drew a walk before Toso sent a home run to center to earn the 6-5 win for the Spiders.
DUE UP:
  • A contest originally scheduled for Saturday, March 12 against Richmond has been canceled due to inclement weather.
  • As a result, the Crusaders will face off against the Spiders once more on Sunday, March 13, with first pitch moved back to 1 p.m.
