Softball defeated by Charleston Sunday

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Holy Cross softball team wrapped up their trip to South Carolina falling to the College of Charleston 9-1 in five innings Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point.

The win sends the host Cougars to 3-7 while the Crusaders head back north to Worcester with a 1-4 mark.

IN THE CIRCLE:
  • McKenna Kelly: W (1-1), 5.0 innings pitched, strikeout, three hits allowed, two walks, earned run.
  • Senior Kelly Nelson: L (0-3), 4.1 innings pitched four strikeouts, nine hits allowed, three walks, seven earned runs.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Sophomore Jessica Mott: 1-for-3, double, RBI.
  • Sophomore Megan Yurchick: 2-for-2.
  • Junior Olivia Eckelman: 0-for-1, walk, stolen base.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Mott smacked a leadoff double on an 0-1 pitch in the top of the third then scored on Bates sacrifice fly.
  • In the home half of the third, the Cougars put home two runs via a Payton Wade double into the left centerfield gap to jump ahead 2-1.
  • Charleston broke the game open in the fifth inning using three run scoring doubles, a triple and two RBI singles to win by the run rule.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross will be back in action on Saturday, March 5 in Jacksonville, Fla. When they take on Fairleigh Dickinson for the first day of the JU/UNF Spring Break Challenge at 11:00 a.m.
