JACKSONVILLE – The Holy Cross softball team earned a split on Saturday, the first day of their 12-game trip to the Sunshine State. They recorded their second shutout win of the season, an 11-0 six inning victory against Fairleigh Dickinson before falling to Saint Francis 7-0 in game two.
The Crusaders move to 2-5 with the split while the Knights slide to 4-9 and the Red Flash improve to 9-8 with the win.

GAME ONE: CRUSADERS 11, KNIGHTS 0 (FINAL – 6 INN.):
IN THE CIRCLE:
- Senior Kelly Nelson: W (1-3), 6.0 innings, complete game, shutout, 10 strikeouts, three hits allowed.
- Payton Wagner: L (1-3), 3.1 innings, three runs – zero earned, six hits, two walks
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Holy Cross took a 5-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning getting all runs via error after Yurchick, Nagel, and Eckelman singled to load the bases in the early portion of the frame while the third throwing error of the plated three runs for the 5-0 margin. The fourth miscue of the inning for the Knights allowed the sixth run to score.
- Bengston expanded the lead to 8-0 with a double to centerfield and Nagel kept the line moving bashing a three-run shot upping the score to 11-0 in the top of the sixth.
- Nelson was unhittable in the circle for Holy Cross allowing only three base runners in her first double-digit strikeout performance of the season. She also recorded her 400th career strikeout in the victory.

GAME TWO: RED FLASH 7, CRUSADERS 0 (FINAL):
IN THE CIRCLE:
- Grace Vesco: W (4-5), 7.0 innings, complete game, shutout, seven strikeouts, three hits allowed.
- Yurchick: L (1-2), 3.2 innings, five runs – five earned, three strikeouts, seven hits allowed, three walks.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
- Sydney Baker: 2-for-4, home run, two RBI.
- Rachel Marsden: 1-for-3, home run, two RBI, walk.
- Olivia Ulam: 2-for-4, double, RBI, two runs.
- Nagel: 1-for-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Marsden drilled a solo tater in the top of the second and Baker followed after a walk powering the ball over the fence for a two run shot to lead 3-0.
- The Crusaders threatened in the bottom of the third when junior Olivia Eckelman singled to left and junior Kari Jacobson followed with a single and a steal putting two runners in scoring position with only one down. However, the next two batters were retired as the game stayed at 3-0. Holy Cross could only muster one more hit, in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- An Ulam double coupled with a Frank single that brought in Ulam increased the score to 5-0. Vesco kept the Crusaders out of the hit column and the Red Flash tacked on two insurance runs for the win.
DUE UP:
- Holy Cross will battle Jacksonville (3-12) tomorrow in a double header with first pitch of game one slated for 10:00 a.m.
