Baseball falls short in season opener vs. Troy

TROY, Ala. — An eighth-inning home run lifted Troy University to a 2-1 victory over the Holy Cross baseball team on Friday, Feb. 18 at Riddle-Pace Field in the teams' season opener.

After Holy Cross (0-1) trailed the Trojans (1-0) by a run early, senior catcher Angelo D'Acunto used a sacrifice bunt to drive in a runner in the top of the sixth before Troy secured the eighth-inning solo homer.

Junior right-handed pitcher Jack DiLauro had a stellar outing in his season debut, allowing just one run and one hit in six innings of work while striking out nine in the no-decision. Sophomore second baseman Sam Kirkpatrick scored the Crusaders' lone run during a 2-for-4 day; D'Acunto threw out a pair of runners on the basepaths.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross put two runners on early with a pair of first-inning singles; sophomore right fielder Jake McElroy was stranded at third base after a flyout to center.
  • Troy loaded up the bases in the third inning and drove in a run with a two-out walk, but a fielder's choice ended the inning and limited the damage to just one run.
  • DiLauro struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth, and after he hit Colin Summerhill with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, D'Acunto threw out Summerhill at second base to end the inning.
  • After back-to-back singles by Kirkpatrick and senior first baseman Nate Wolf put runners on the corners in the top of the sixth, D'Acunto's sacrifice bunt drove home Kirkpatrick to knot things up at 1-1.
  • DiLauro struck out a pair of batters and drew a groundout for a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth.
  • Despite putting a pair of runners on with two outs in the top of the seventh, Holy Cross couldn't drive across the go-ahead run.
  • Summerhill hit a solo homer to left field to give the Trojans a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth.
  • Troy drew three Holy Cross groundouts in the top of the ninth to secure the win.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Freshman center fielder Tyler Mudd and freshman third baseman Nick Wang each recorded a base hit in their collegiate debuts.
