Women's hockey falls short against Boston University

BOSTON, Mass. — The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team fell short with a 3-2 overtime loss against the Boston University Terriers, a Hockey East opponent. The Crusaders fall to 2-18-1 (1-14-0 Hockey East) and while the Terriers improve to 7-12-0 overall and 6-9-0 in Hockey East standings. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders started off strong creating multiple scoring opportunities. They managed nine shots on goal by the end of the period, including four on a power play. Senior Darci Johal led the Crusaders with four shots on goal after the first.
  • Boston managed long possessions in the offensive zone but were turned away the Crusaders' defensive front. Holy Cross tallied nine blocked shots in the first.
  • The Terriers went on the board first with a breakaway goal at 18:45 in the first period.  
  • A Terrier was sent to the box halfway through the second period setting the Crusaders up for their second power play of the night. Senior Mary Edmonds positioned herself in front of the net, taking a quick wrist shot that was saved by the Boston goaltender. Edmonds found the rebound and sent it to the back of the net at 11:45 in the second. She was assisted by seniors Sofia Smithson and Darci Johal.
  • Shortly after Edmonds' goal, senior Kailey Langefels took a slap shot from the top of the zone. The puck was deflected by freshman Charlotte Sonntag and landed to the left of net. Junior Millie Sirum recovered the loose puck and took a seamless backhanded shot to move the puck past the goalie and give the Crusaders their first lead of the game at 14:02 in the second. 
  • Boston University managed to tie the game with a quick answer at 15:40. 
  • The third period was fast-paced with both teams recording many shots to try to retake the lead, but ultimately remained scoreless sending the game into overtime.
  • The Terriers took a quick goal fifty seconds into the extra period, securing the victory.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Edmonds recorded her fifth goal of the season (first power play goal) against the Terriers. She leads the team in goals and lands second in total points with eight.
  • Smithson and Johal each recorded their fourth assist on the year. Smithson holds seven points and Johal owns five on the year.
  • Sirum tallied her second goal of the season adding to her season point total of seven, from two goals and five assists.
  • Langefels added her third assist of the season and Sonntag recorded her first point as a Crusader with an assist on Sirum's goal. 
  • Madison Beck posted 27 saves adding to her season total, 439. She owns a 2.72 goals-against average with a save percentage of .920 for the year.
UP NEXT: 
  • Holy Cross will return in 2023 to face Boston University on Jan. 6. The teams will faceoff in Fenway Park as part of the Frozen Fenway games.  Puck drop is slated for 6:30 p.m.
