Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s basketball winning streak snapped by Vermont

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's basketball five-game winning streak came to an end as nonconference opponent Vermont led wire-to-wire in a 64-34 victory Tuesday afternoon in the Hart Center Arena.

The Crusaders (8-3) came within four points in the third quarter until the Catamounts' (8-4) Delaney Richason got hot from beyond the arc burying three straight triples to reestablish a double-digit point lead that they wouldn't relinquish.

Junior Janelle Allen paced Holy Cross in scoring dropping 13 points on 6-of-14 (42.9%) shooting. Three players scored in double figures for Vermont including Anna Olson who dropped a game-high 15 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Vermont began the game on a 9-0 run over the opening 4:03 of the contest. A senior Addisyn Cross three-pointer on the left wing put the Crusaders down six, 15-9 at the 1:27 mark.
  • In the second quarter, Delaney Richason knocked down a triple to double up Holy Cross 20-10. Holy Cross closed the first half on an 8-3 burst scoring the final six points from freshman Kaitlyn Flanagan, Allen, and junior Cara McCormack.
  • A Flanagan corner trifecta dished off by McCormack pulled with Crusaders within four, 24-20. Freshman Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly brought the Crusaders within four again, 29-25, however, Richason converted three straight threes to regain the multiple score lead at 38-25. The Vermont run extended to 11 straight points 40-25 when Anna Olson dumped in an uncontested layup.
  • During the fourth stanza, the Catamounts outscored the Crusaders 18-to-5.

OUTSIDE THE BOX:
  • The 30-point loss was the first time the Crusaders lost by 30-39 points since falling at Bucknell (31-66) on March 14, 2019.
  • Holy Cross allowed an opponent to convert over 50% from three-point range for the first time this season (8-of-13, 61.5%).
  • The Crusaders shot a season-low 24.1% (13-of-54) from the field and were a combined 28.6% (8-of-28) from inside the paint.
  • Holy Cross turned the ball over 20 or more times for the fifth time this season. The Crusaders are 3-2 in those games.
