Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Holy Cross drops game to Northeastern in closing seconds

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior forward Gerrale Gates totaled 19 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was edged by Northeastern 59-58 at Matthews Arena. The Crusaders fall to 3-8 overall, while the Huskies improve to 3-6 on the year.

Holy Cross held Northeastern to 19.0 percent shooting from three-point range and 45.3 percent shooting from the floor overall, but the Huskies did make 56.5 percent of their field goal attempts in the second half. The Crusaders hit 42.3 percent of their shots from the field and 46.7 percent of their three-pointers.

Northeastern opened the game with an early 12-6 lead after the first six minutes of play, when Holy Cross went on a 20-4 run to take a 10-point advantage (26-16). Both Gates and junior guard Nolan Dorsey scored six points during that spurt. The Crusaders went on to take a 31-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Holy Cross held onto a small lead early the second half, and was still up by six (43-37) with 12 minutes left to play. The Huskies then used an 8-2 run to tie up the game, and would later pull in front by five (57-52) with 2:55 remaining. Freshman guard Will Batchelder would knock down three-point shots on two of the Crusaders' next three possessions to keep the game close, trimming the deficit to 59-58. Holy Cross would then get the ball back with 5.6 seconds remaining, but a three-point attempt by junior guard Joe Octave was just off the mark as time expired and Northeastern held on for the win.

Dorsey finished the afternoon with 12 points, while Batchelder added 10 points and four rebounds. The Huskies were led by Chris Doherty with 14 points and nine rebounds.

The Crusaders return to action on Monday, Dec. 19, when they travel to New Hampshire for a 7:00 p.m. game.
