Holy Cross downs Boston University 2-1 in season finale

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior forward Dylan Scanley and sophomore midfielder Marcus Williams both scored goals, as the Holy Cross men's soccer team defeated Boston University 2-1 at Linda Johnson Smith Stadium. The Crusaders improve to 5-9-4 overall and 1-5-3 in the Patriot League, while the Terriers fall to 6-5-6 on the year and 4-2-3 in the conference.

Boston University opened the scoring in the 24th minute, when Andrew Rent eluded Holy Cross sophomore goalkeeper Josh Tubbs in the right side of the box, then crossed the ball to Daniel Kim who scored on an open net from eight yards out in the center.

The Crusaders came back in the 38th minute to tie up the game at 1-1 on a goal by Scanley. The play began when sophomore forward Evan Jones passed the ball to freshman forward Ethan Gill, who sent a cross to Scanley above the right side of the penalty box. Scanley then fired a shot into the lower left corner of the net from 20 yards away.

Less than five minutes later, Marcus Williams scored what proved to be the game-winning goal to give Holy Cross a 2-1 lead. Sophomore midfielder Jake Williams sent a cross from just outside the left side of the box, while was volleyed toward the net by senior forward Matt McGonigle. Marcus Williams then fired a shot which was saved, but he immediately knocked his own rebound into the goal.

The Terriers would outshoot the Crusaders 11-4 in the second half, but were unable to score as Holy Cross held on for the win.

Tubbs made two saves on the night to earn the victory, while Francesco Montali had six saves for Boston University.

The Crusaders finished the game with a 15-14 advantage in shots, while the Terriers held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

The 2022 season is now complete for Holy Cross.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• Scanley's goal was his first of the season and the 10th of his career as a Crusader.
Marcus Williams' goal was his second of the year, and he finished the season ranked second on the team in scoring with nine points on two goals and five assists.
