Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Crusaders bested by Northeastern

WORCESTER, Mass. — The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team was defeated by No. 7/8 Northeastern on Saturday night, 5-2. The Crusaders fall to 2-13-1 (1-11-0 Hockey East) while the Huskies move to 14-2-1 and 12-2-1 in Hockey East play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • Unlike Friday's game, the scoring started early. Northeastern placed one in the net at 1:40 to take the quick lead.
  • The Huskies received a power play opportunity at 8:16 in the first period but were unsuccessful. Junior goalie Madison Beck tallied five saves during the penalty kill.
  • Holy Cross took their turn on the power play before the end of the period, but couldn't even the score.
  • Similar to the first period, Northeastern scored early in the second to take a two-goal lead at 1:06. Shortly after, the Crusaders received their second penalty of the game. The Huskies capitalized on the advantage with a power play goal at 6:19, extending their lead to three.
  • The Huskies received a five-minute major halfway through the second period, sparking a momentum shift. Kailey Langefels fired a shot from the center of the offensive zone to put the Crusaders on the board at 15:00. She was assisted by junior Millie Sirum and sophomore Carmen Elliott.
  • Junior Lilly Feeney snuck through two Huskies at the top of the defensive zone, stealing the puck. She skated into the offensive zone and made a seamless behind the back pass to senior Mary Edmonds. Edmonds quickly sent the puck towards the net where junior Bryn Saarela tapped it in to bring Holy Cross within one score with thirty-five seconds remaining in the second period.
  • The Huskies fell into a rhythm in the third period, adding two more goals to secure the win.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Saturday's game was Kailey Langefels' 100 career game as a Crusader. Her goal was her first of the season. She now has three points on the year.
  • Bryn Saarela added to her team-high point total. She has seven from three goals and four assists. 
  • Millie Sirum and Mary Edmonds rank second in points after recording an assist apiece. 
  • Lilly Feeney added her second assist of the season, while Carmen Elliott tallied her first point of the year.
  • Madison Beck tallied 36 saves on the night, adding to her season total 319. She sits at a 2.90 goals-against average and .917 save percentage for the season.
  • Alexia Moreau led the Crusaders in faceoffs going 10-7. The faceoffs fell in favor of Holy Cross 26-24. 
UP NEXT: 
  • Holy Cross faces a short turnaround as they prepare to face Brown on Tuesday night. The Crusaders will travel to Providence with puck drop is slated for 6 p.m.
