Field hockey shuts out American

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's field hockey team shut out Patriot League opponent the American University Eagles, 1-0.

The win sends the Crusaders to 4-8 and the Eagles to 6-6 on the season. Junior defender Haley Davis scored the lone goal of the day off of a penalty stroke.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After two-quarters of strong defense, Davis was awarded the penalty stroke after drawing a foul from American's Lotta Curanz. Davis faced off against goaltender Bryn Underwood, and her shot found the back of the cage.
  • Junior goaltender Brooke Ross made two saves in the game, while Underwood made seven of the eight shots on goal she faced.

OUTSIDE THE BOX:
  • This contest marks the first conference win of the season for the Crusaders after falling to both Boston University and Bucknell.
  • This also marks the first win over American in 20 years. The last win for Holy Cross came in 2002 when the Crusaders won 3-2.
  • The goal marked the first of Davis's collegiate career.
  • Ross earned her first shutout of the season with her most recent coming on Sept. 12, 2021, when Holy Cross won 1-0 over Sacred Heart.
  • The Crusaders led the day in shots on goal, 8-2.
UP NEXT:
  • The Crusaders will return to action when they travel to Colgate on Oct. 14 at 5:00 p.m. and return home to host Long Island on Sunday, Oct. 16 at noon.
