Lafayette downs Holy Cross in straight sets

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback at the hands of Patriot League opponent Lafayette Saturday in the Crusaders' Title IX contest.

The win improves the Leopards record to 6-10, 3-6 PL while the Crusaders slide to 2-18, 0-9 PL.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sophomore Lauren Halverson gave the Crusaders a 5-4 lead as she placed an ace for the first Holy Cross edge in the contest. Trailing by two, freshman Rachel Johnson pulled the hosts back within one at 9-8. From there a 16-4 Leopard burst clinched the opening set 25-12.
  • Both teams traded points through the early portion of the second set. A freshman to freshman, Katie Russell to Johnson connection pushed the Crusaders ahead 9-8. A few serves later, Johnson leveled the score 12-12 with an ace. Four in a row regained the lead toward the Lafayette side 16-13. Their edge expanded to five following a Crusader blocking error. Coming out of a timeout, Holy Cross got a kill from sophomore Rian Millership with two Lafayette attack errors which dropped the margin to 20-18. The Leopards produced the final five points to take a commanding 2-0 match lead.
  • Lafayette doubled up Holy Cross early 8-4. An Abby Nieporte attack error put the Crusaders down 8-6. At the media timeout, Holy Cross trailed 15-11. Senior Gracyn Benck cut the Crusader deficit to four, 20-16. The Leopards eventually won the match 3-0.
INSIDE THE BOX:
  • Lafayette hit .289 as a team in the match. Holy Cross hit .013.
  • Carol Ulichney hit .440 with a contest-best 14 kills.
  • Sophomore Mia Hofacker hit over .400 for the fifth time this season leading the Crusaders with a .417 hitting percentage.
UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross continues its conference schedule on Friday, October 21 at Loyola (Md.) with first serve slated for 7:00 p.m.
