BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior forward
Dylan Scanley scored the only goal of the game as the Holy Cross men's soccer team defeated Loyola (Md.) 1-0 at the Ridley Athleic Complex. The Crusaders improve to 5-2-2 overall and 2-0-0 in the Patriot League with the victory, while the Greyhounds fall to 2-3-2 on the year and 1-1-0 in the conference.
In the 50th minute, freshman defender
Marcus Williams sent a cross from the left corner which junior midfielder
Matt McGonigle one-timed toward the front of the goal. Scanley was waiting there to knock the ball into the net from two yards out in the center of the box.
Junior goalkeeper
Jimmy Joyce posted this third shutout of the season while making three saves. Chase Vosvick had three saves and one goal allowed for Loyola.
Both teams took 11 shots on the day, while the Crusaders held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Holy Cross returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 29, when it plays host to Colgate at 6:00 p.m.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• With the victory over the Greyhounds, the Crusaders have now defeated the teams picked first (Loyola) and second (American) in this year's Patriot League preseason poll.
• Scanley's goal was his second of the season and the eighth of his collegiate career.
