LORETTO, Pa.— The Holy Cross field hockey team opened the 2021 season with a 3-0 win over the Saint Francis Red Flash on Friday afternoon at Degol Field.
Sophomore
Allie McDonough opened the scoring just before the half, to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. Holy Cross would tack on two more goals in the third period.
Freshman
Meggan Fourie scored in her debut match as a Crusader and pushed the lead to 2-0. Senior
Caitlin Little assisted Fourie's goal for her first point of the season. Junior
Sinead Walsh finished out the scoring and gave the Crusaders their 3-0 victory.
Sophomore
Brooke Ross and junior
Emma Lauber combined for the shutout. Ross picked up the victory and made two saves in 45 minutes of action, while Lauber played all 15 minutes during the final frame.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Crusaders won their season opener for the first time since 2016 when the team defeated Siena, 3-2.
- The Crusaders shutout their opponent for the first time since 2019, when Holy Cross defeated Colgate, 2-0.
- Meggan Fourie is the first Crusader freshman since 2016 to score in a season opener.
