Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Jones scores first career goal, men’s soccer ties Hartford 1-1 in season opener

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Freshman forward Evan Jones scored a goal in his collegiate debut, as the Holy Cross men's soccer team played Hartford to a 1-1 double overtime tie at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium. The Crusaders and the Hawks both open the season at 0-0-1 overall.

Following a scoreless first half, Tomer Drimmer gave Hartford a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute. Drimmer scored on a direct free kick from 20 yards out after a foul occurred just outside the penalty box.

Holy Cross responded in the 82nd minute when Jones found the net off an assist from senior forward Max Krause. Senior defender Nick Hellmann-Rhodes delivered a throw in to Krause on the Crusader side of midfield, then Krause sent a long pass over top of the defense to a streaking Jones, who collected the ball just outside the penalty box before scoring from 16 yards out.

Neither team was able to score again for the rest of regulation, then the game ended in a tie following two scoreless overtime periods.

Junior goalkeeper Jimmy Joyce made four saves on the night while allowing just one goal. The Hawks' Rotem Fadida made one save and allowed one goal.

Hartford finished the game with a 14-5 advantage in shots and a 9-5 edge in corner kicks.

Holy Cross returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 1, when it plays host to Manhattan at 6:00 p.m.
