HAMILTON, N.Y – The Holy Cross softball team dropped a pair of games to Colgate Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders came up short in game one, 5-3, before falling in game two, 3-0.
Kari Jacobson was 3-for-5 on the day with a double.
Olivia Eckelman had one hit, stole a base, and scored a run.
Bailey Bates had one hit, drew a walk, scored a run, and had one RBI.
In the circle,
Kelly Nelson started the first game going four innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out three.
Megan Yurchick came on in relief in game one and got the start in game two. In total, the freshman went eight innings allowing four runs, three earned, while striking out two.
The Holy Cross defense turned three double plays on the day, giving them 13 on the year and tying them at fourth in the nation with .59 per game.
GAME 1: COLGATE 5, HC 3
The Raiders got out to a fast start as four hits, one walk, and one error led to the home team plating three runs in the bottom half of the first. The Crusaders would answer back in the second though, as Eckelman singled and stole second and was driven home on a Bates single up the middle. Bates scored on an error by the second baseman.
Holy Cross would go on to tie the game at three in the third when, after walking,
Jessie Nagel came home on a wild pitch. The tie was short lived as Colgate used a pair of singles in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead, 4-3.
The Raiders would add an insurance run in the sixth after a double and an error. The Crusaders had a chance to tie the game up in the seventh with two outs after Nagel was hit by a pitch and
Erin Bengston singled, but Colgate would get the final out to claim the 5-3 victory.
GAME 2: COLGATE 3, HC 0
Colgate got out to a fast start again, scoring all three runs over the first two innings. A solo shot to leadoff the first plated one, while a single and a sac fly brought home the other two in the second. Yurchick allowed just four hits over the final four innings to keep the Raiders from adding to their lead.
Jacobson singled in the third for Holy Cross and Nagel did the same in the fourth, but neither opportunity materialized into any runs.
In the seventh, Nagel drew a one-out walk, but was stranded on second when the final out was recorded.
ON DECK:
The Crusaders will travel to Lehigh tomorrow, Sunday, May 2, for a doubleheader with the Mountain Hawks beginning at 1 p.m.
