WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team finished out its four-game series with Boston University with a couple of losses Saturday afternoon at home.
The Crusaders did a better job limiting a strong Terrier offense than on Friday, but were not able to get their own bats going enough to come away with either game.
Kelly Nelson and
Megan Yurchick appeared in both games with Nelson starting game one and Yurchick game two. On the day, Nelson went 8.2 innings giving up four runs, three earned, on nine hits, two walks, and striking out two. Yurchick threw 5.1 innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits, one walk, and two strikeouts.
Olivia Eckelman was 3-for-6 at the plate on the day to lead all Crusader batters.
Erin Bengston had a pair of hits and picked up one RBI.
Bailey Chavez had one hit and scored the lone Crusader run.
GAME 1: BU 5, HC 1
Holy Cross got on the board first in the first game of the day. Chavez reached base on an error in the first Crusaders at bat and would come home from third on a Bengston single.
Nelson cruised through the first three innings, allowing just a single hit through the first three frames. The Terriers would break through in the fourth when a single and a double were followed by a triple to bring home two runs and a sac fly to right plated a third.
The Terriers added two more in the fifth after a couple of doubles and an error to make the game 5-1.
The Crusaders put two runners on base in the seventh after Eckelman singled and Leach reached on an error, but BU was able to get the final two outs of the inning without letter either cross the plate.
GAME 2: BU 4, HC 0
After Yurchick recorded the first two outs of the second inning, the Terriers strung together a single, a walk, and a home run to take a 3-0 lead.
The Crusaders would not go down without a fight, as they loaded the bases in the fourth inning after
Jessie Nagel singled, Bengston reached on an error, and Eckelman singled. The Terriers worked out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout back to the pitcher.
BU added one more in the fifth when a runner came around from second on an error.
Holy Cross would put runners on second and third in the sixth after Bengston and Yurchick hit back-to-back singles, but the Terriers again got the next two outs to keep the Crusaders off the board.
In bottom of the seventh,
Kari Jacobson drew a one-out walk and Chavez followed her with a single, but the game would end with two straight fly outs to right.

The Crusaders are currently scheduled to take on Colgate next weekend in New York.
