WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team dropped a 9-4 decision to Albany Wednesday afternoon. The teams were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader, but the second game was rained out.
Despite the loss,
Bailey Chavez and
Erin Bengston continued their hot streaks at the plate. Bengston was 2-for-3 with one run and Chavez was 2-for-4 with one run and one triple.
Megan Yurchick hit her first collegiate home run in her only at bat driving in two, while
Bailey Bates and
Mel Leach each had one hit and one walk with Leach scoring one run and Bates driving one in.
Yurchick also got the start in the circle and went the first two innings giving up two runs, neither earned, and allowing just two hits.
Kelly Nelson came in and pitched a perfect third with one strikeout, while
Peyton Morehouse and Leach split the final four innings.
Albany 9, HC 4
After a quick first inning, the Great Danes struck first in the top of the second with a double down the left field line that plated two. The Crusaders would answer back in the bottom half when, following a Bengston single, Yurchick homered just inside the left field foul pole to tie the game at two.
Holy Cross took a brief lead in the third when Chavez led the frame off with a triple and later scored on a wild pitch for the 3-2 lead. But Albany would go on to score two runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth to take a commanding lead.
The Crusaders got one back in the seventh when Leach walked, Chavez singled her over to third, and Bates singled her home. That's where the rally would end as the Great Danes claimed the 9-4 victory.

- Chavez is now 7-for-11 in the last three games bringing her batting average up to .286.
- Meanwhile, Bengston is 5-for-8 during those same three games bringing her average up to a team-leading .349.
