WEST POINT, N.Y. – Ellie Zern's first collegiate goal wasn't enough to lift the Holy Cross women's soccer team over Army, as the Crusaders fell to the Black Knights by a score of 2-1 Friday evening.
In a first half controlled mostly by Army, it was Holy Cross who would get on the score sheet first. In the 38
th minute,
Claire Carew sent a ball through the Black Knight back line that Zern ran onto and found herself completely behind the Army defense. She took two touches before getting off a shot from 10 yards out that found its way into the bottom left corner, beating a charging Black Knight goalie. The game would go into the half with the Crusaders up 1-0.
Army started the second half off strong by scoring just under four minutes in. Melanie Hupp let a shot go from 30 yards out that had just enough on it to fight off the wind and sail into the top right corner of the net.
The contest looked destined for overtime, that is until the final 30 seconds. A ball floated into the box from the right side curved with the wind and found the foot of Erynn Johns. She got off a weak shot, that ended up being a better pass, that Trinity Garay buried for the game-winner.
