Holy Cross takes down Army 2-1

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Dylan Scanley and sophomore midfielder Matt McGonigle both scored goals as the Holy Cross men's soccer team posted a 2-1 victory over Army West Point at Malek Stadium at Clinton Field. The Crusaders improve to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the Patriot League with the win, while the Black Knights fall to 2-1 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.

The Crusaders opened the scoring in the 18th minute, when McGonigle gained possession off a turnover in the Army end and fed Scanley at the top of the penalty box for a goal from 18 yards out. Holy Cross then increased its lead to 2-0 in the 67th minute, as senior midfielder Max Krause sent a cross into the box, which McGonigle collected in front of the goal and knocked home from six yards out.

Army was able to trim the margin to 2-1 in the 89th minute, when Eric Whiteman scored on a header. But the Black Knights would not threaten again, as the Crusaders held on for the victory.

Senior goalkeeper Nick Conklu picked up the win for Holy Cross, making two saves while allowing one goal. Jacob Suppiah recorded three saves for Army.

"We had a really good overall, collective team effort today," said head coach Marco Koolman. "When you are playing on the road, you need to capitalize when you get chances, and we were able to do that today. Our team was very combative throughout the game, and it was a well-deserved victory."

Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, March 27, when it plays host to Army at 2:00 p.m.
