WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder
Bergin Kranz scored with just 18 seconds left in regulation to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Holy Cross men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Boston University at Linda Johnson Smith Stadium. The Crusaders improve to 2-1 overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League with the win, while the Terriers fall to 1-2 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.
Holy Cross had opened the scoring in the 37th minute, when senior midfielder
Max Krause hooked a corner kick toward the back post, where the ball deflected off the Boston University goalkeeper and into the net. The Terriers tied the game at 1-1 seconds later when Andrew Rent scored from eight yards out on the right side.
In the 84th minute, senior goalkeeper
Nick Conklu made a save on a penalty kick attempt by Ronaldo Marshall to keep the game tied. Then in the 90th minute, junior midfielder
Dylan Scanley forced a turnover deep in Boston University territory and fed Kranz for the game-winning goal from 10 yards out in the center of the penalty box.
The Crusaders finished the game with a 16-8 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Conklu made two saves on the night, while Andrew Wike had six saves for the Terriers.
"It was a great team effort tonight," said head coach
Marco Koolman. "We were fantastic defensively, and created some good chances on the offensive end. I'm proud of our guys for giving everything they had and picking up a very well deserved win."
