Holy Cross falls to New Hampshire

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore guard DáJion Humphrey scored a career-high 13 points, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by New Hampshire 70-55 at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. The Crusaders fall to 2-5 overall, while the Wildcats improve to 3-2 on the year.

Holy Cross finished the game with a season-low 10 turnovers and made all eight of its free throws, but was only able to connect on 36.4 percent of its shots from the floor. New Hampshire hit 47.3 percent of its field goal attempts and held a 38-24 rebounding advantage.

The Crusaders opened the game by jumping out to a quick 7-2 lead, but the Wildcats responded with a 13-0 run to go in front by eight (15-7). Holy Cross scored the next seven points to pull to within one (15-14), before New Hampshire used a 10-0 spurt to extend its lead to double digits (25-14). The Wildcats went on to take a 31-19 advantage into the locker room.

New Hampshire used a pair of free throws early in the second half to go up by 14 (33-19), before freshman guard Kyrell Luc scored eight straight points to trim the margin to six (33-27). But the Wildcats scored the next 16 points and went on to lead by double figures for the remainder of the game. In the end, New Hampshire posted a 15-point victory.

Luc finished the game with 11 points, six rebounds and two steals, while sophomore guard R.J. Johnson recorded 10 points and two steals. The Wildcats were led by Jayden Martinez with 20 points and seven rebounds.

The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 1, when they travel to Central Connecticut for a 7:00 p.m. game.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• Holy Cross made 100 percent of its free throws for the first time since Feb. 8, 2017, at Lafayette.
• Humphrey scored in double figures for the third time in the last five games. 
• Johnson reached double digits in scoring for the first time this season and the seventh time in his career.
