WORCESTER, Mass.— Senior
Avery LaBarbera of the Holy Cross women's basketball team reached 1,000 career points as the Crusaders downed Dartmouth, 77-49, on Tuesday night at the Hart Center.
LaBarbera led the way for the Crusaders (1-2, 0-0 PL) in their first victory of the season with a career-high six three-pointers and 23 points total. The 1,000-point scorer also chipped in six assists, four rebounds and three steals. LaBarbera is the 35th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone and first since Lauren Manis. She reached the milestone during the second quarter after her third three-pointer of the game, she now has 1,013 points in her career.Â
Seniors
Oluchi Ezemma and
Madison Demski along with sophomore
Bronagh Power-Cassidy all reached double-figures in scoring. Ezemma tallied 16, while Demski and Power-Cassidy had 10 each. Additionally, Demski led all players with a career-high seven rebounds.
Dartmouth (0-3, 0-0 IVY) was paced by Grace Niekelski who tallied 16 points, while Doreen Ariik grabbed five boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Holy Cross jumped out to an 8-3 lead, with LaBarbera hitting back-to-back three-pointers, forcing Dartmouth to call an early timeout. The Big Green managed to pull within six late into the first, but the Crusaders managed to take a nine-point lead into the second quarter.
- In the second quarter, Holy Cross quickly extended its lead to 14 with sophomore Janelle Allen and Avery LaBarbera opening the scoring. The Crusaders managed to a take a 43-27 lead into the second half.
- The third quarter was back-and-forth in the early going with each team tallying nine points. Demski then got a layup to and made good on her and-one foul shot, to help the Crusaders close out the quarter on a 7-0 scoring run.
- Holy Cross chipped in 18 more points in the final stanza to take home the 77-49 victory over the Big Green.
BEYOND THE BOX:
- LaBarbera is the first Holy Cross player since Kathryn Pedi on Dec. 8, 2019 to hit six three-pointers.
- Junior Addisyn Cross' six rebounds were a career-high.
- The Crusader defense held Dartmouth to just nine points in the third quarter, a season low for an opponent.
