Crusaders downed by Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. – Sophomore guard Judson Martindale totaled 15 points, six rebounds and two steals, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Quinnipiac 76-68 at the People's United Center. The Crusaders fall to 1-2 overall, while the Bobcats improve to 2-1 on the year.

Holy Cross made 45.5 percent (10 of 22) of its three-point field goal attempts and 72.7 percent of its free throws (eight of 11), but only hit 41.0 percent (25 of 61) of its shots from the floor overall. Quinnipiac was able to connect on 44.4 percent (28 of 63) of its field goal attempts and 37.9 percent (11 of 29) of its three-pointers, while holding a 37-34 rebounding advantage. 

The Bobcats opened the game with an early 12-7 lead, before the Crusaders scored the next seven points to pull in front. Quinnipiac was later up 30-28, when Holy Cross went on a 14-4 run to claim its biggest lead of the night (42-34). The Crusaders eventually took a 43-38 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

After Holy Cross scored the opening basket of the second half, the Bobcats used an 8-0 spurt to pull back in front (46-45). Quinnipiac was still clinging to a one-point lead (50-49) with 14 minutes left, when it used another 8-0 run to go up by nine (58-49). The Crusaders were able to keep things close, and trailed by just three (69-66) with 1:51 remaining. But the Bobcats went on to hit seven of 10 free throws down the stretch to pull out the victory.

Freshman guard Kyrell Luc finished the night with 14 points, five rebounds and two assists, while sophomore guard DáJion Humphrey tallied 12 points, five rebounds and three blocks. Senior guard Malcolm Townsel added 12 points and three boards, and sophomore guard Bo Montgomery finished with 11 points and three rebounds. Quinnipiac was led by Tymu Chenery with 14 points.

Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 20, when it plays Air Force at 2:30 p.m. in Daytona Beach, Fla., as part of the Sunshine Slam.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• The Crusaders had five players score in double figures for the first time since Jan. 22, 2020, when they defeated Lehigh 96-95 in overtime.
• Humphrey set career highs for points, rebounds and blocks, while reaching double digits in scoring for the first time in his collegiate career. 
• Holy Cross blocked eight shots as a team, its most in a game this season.
