WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior defender
Nick Hellmann-Rhodes and senior midfielder
Max Krause both scored goals as the Holy Cross men's soccer team tied Lafayette 2-2 in double overtime at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. The Crusaders now stand 8-6-3 overall and 5-2-1 in the Patriot League, while the Leopards move to 7-7-3 on the season and 3-3-2 in the conference.
Holy Cross opened the scoring in the 34th minute when Hellmann-Rhodes knocked in a loose ball along the goal line after a shot by junior midfielder
Jack Ostrosky was saved. The Crusaders then made the score 2-0 in the 38th minute on a 25-yard blast by Krause, with assists to junior midfielder
Zachary Schubert and freshman forward
Jon Klein.
Lafayette responded in the 73rd minute when Hale Lombard headed in an Andrew Venezia corner kick. Then in the 76th minute, Venezia scored on a direct free kick from just outside the top of the box to tie the game at 2-2. Neither team would score again in regulation or overtime, as the game ended in a tie.
Junior goalkeeper
Jimmy Joyce made three saves for Holy Cross, while Griffin Huff made two saves for Lafayette.
The Leopards finished the game with a 24-8 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 4, when they travel to Boston University for a 6:00 p.m. game.
SENIOR DAY:
• Prior to the contest, three senior members of the Holy Cross men's soccer program who will be concluding their collegiate careers at the end of the 2021 season were honored in a pregame ceremony.
• Hellmann-Rhodes, Krause and midfielder
Andres Chacon were all recognized.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• With the tie, Holy Cross locked up a berth to the 2021 Patriot League Tournament.
• The Crusaders are currently in second place in the Patriot League standings, one half game behind Loyola (Md.).
• Holy Cross can still finish anywhere from first to fourth in the final standings.
