WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross football team cruised past Georgetown, winning 48-14 in the Crusaders' Patriot League opener on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Fitton Field.
The Crusaders (4-2, 1-0 Patriot League) finished with a season-high 516 yards of offense, led by sophomore quarterback
Matthew Sluka, who totaled 136 passing yards and 92 yards on the ground; Sluka passed for a pair of touchdowns while running for two more. Senior running back
Peter Oliver ran for 76 yards and a touchdown, while sophomore wide receiver
Jalen Coker finished with a career-high 110 receiving yards. Senior linebacker
Liam Anderson paced the Crusader defense with five tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a pick-six.
Holy Cross held Georgetown (1-4, 0-2 Patriot League) scoreless in the first half and to just six total rushing yards in the game. Joshua Tomas had a game-high 113 receiving yards to lead the Hoyas.
The Crusaders return to action on Oct. 23 when they host Colgate at Polar Park in Downtown Worcester. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Sluka completed a 13-yard pass to senior wide receiver Jack Jewell to cap off the Crusaders' first drive of the game and give Holy Cross a 7-0 lead with 6:24 to go in the first.
- The lead grew to 14-0 after Oliver had an eight-yard touchdown to open the second quarter.
- On the following Georgetown drive, junior linebacker Jacob Dobbs hurried Georgetown quarterback Joseph Brunnell, which led to an interception by senior safety Cristos Argys. The Crusaders went on to score off a one-yard run by Sluka.
- Senior linebacker Liam Anderson picked off a Georgetown pass and returned the ball 39 yards for a touchdown, giving Holy Cross a 28-0 lead with 2:53 left in the half.
- Senior wide receiver Tenio Ayeni caught a nine-yard pass to extend Holy Cross' advantage to 35-0 with 6:51 left in the third.
- After Georgetown got on the board with 6:12 to go in the third, the Crusaders responded with another touchdown, this one a 34-yard run from Sluka to build a 41-7 lead.
- A 13-play drive to open the fourth quarter resulted in a one-yard carry by freshman running back Jordan Fuller for his third touchdown of the year, giving Holy Cross a 48-7 lead.
- Georgetown rounded out the scoring with a nine-play drive, ending with a one-yard touchdown rush with 4:36 left in the contest.
