Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball can't contain BU

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team fell to Boston University, 62-51, on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Hart Center.

Sophomore Avery LaBarbera led the Crusaders (13-9, 6-5 Patriot League) with 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Senior Lauren Manis also reached double figures with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Maggie Pina led BU (12-10, 7-4 Patriot League) with a 19-point showing. Nia Irving had 13 points, while Riley Childs chipped in 10 points and eight boards.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Senior Megan Swords made a layup to open the scoring for the Crusaders, but Pina hit back-to-back 3-pointers for the Terriers. BU's lead grew as high as nine points in the first quarter, 15-6, after Maren Durant made a pair of free throws with 36 seconds to go.
  • After Holy Cross cut within seven points, 19-12, with 6:42 to go in the half, BU had seven unanswered points to build a 26-12 lead. The Crusaders were able to make it a seven-point game again after a pair of baskets from junior Jenay Faulkner and Lauren Manis cut BU's lead to 28-21 at the half.
  • LaBarbera sunk a pair of free throws with 8:22 to go to make it a five-point game, 30-25, but BU responded with eight unanswered points. That lead grew to 14, 45-31, after Tenisha Pressley sunk a 3-pointer with 1:48 left in the third.
  • The Crusaders were able to cut within single digits at multiple points in the fourth quarter; LaBarbera had a steal and a layup, followed by another layup from Faulkner, to make the score 54-48 with four minutes to go.
  • BU responded with a pair of layups, and though senior Madalyn Smith hit a jumper to make it an eight-point game with 1:33 left, the Terriers made their free throws down the stretch to maintain a comfortable lead.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • LaBarbera has reached double figures in seven straight games, including 17 in each of the last two games.
UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross will host Lehigh on Wednesday, Feb. 12.
  • Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
