Men's lacrosse to play at Providence

The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team will play at Providence on Feb. 8 at 3:30 p.m. 
 
Quick Sticks
• The Crusaders opened the 2020 season with a win for the first time since the 2015 season, when they defeated Fairfield, 10-9.
Dan O'Connell and Dean DiNanno earned Patriot League weekly honors as the Faceoff Specialist and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Chris Conlin and Connor Waldron also earned Patriot League honorable mentions for their performances.
• Waldron led all Crusaders with a five-point outing, scoring two goals and posting two assists.
• Three rookies tallied their first collegiate points in their collegiate debut: DiNanno, Cameron Magalotti, and Jayce Lambert. DiNanno posted one goal and two assists, Magalotti scored twice, and Lambert added one goal.
Kevin Kodzis picked up his seventh career hat trick in the season opener and added one assist.
• Holy Cross is one of just 16 Division I teams to return over 80% of its scoring for the 2020 season.
 
Last time out
• The Crusaders defeated Merrimack for the first time in Merrimack's Division I era, 13-12.
• After a 8-4 lead at half time, the Warriors closed the gap until Sean Mullaney netted the game-winning goal.
Jonathan Tesoro, who had six saves in the game, made four stops in the final quarter to help preserve the victory.
Brendan McKenzie made his debut at the faceoff and went a perfect  2-for-2.
Justin Lynskey helped the Crusaders go 2-for-3 in extra man opportunities, with both man-up goals.
• In the season opener, eight Crusaders found the back of the net while 10 added at least one point.
 
Recapping 2019
• The Crusaders finished 2019 with a 7-7 record and a trip to the Patriot League Quarterfinals for the first time since the 2016 season.
• The program boasts its largest number of All-Patriot League team selections, with four, and its first-ever first team selection in Matt Farrell '19. Sean Mullaney, Kevin Kodzis, and Dan O'Connell were all second team selections.
• Holy Cross earned a number of key wins for the program in 2019. The Crusaders took down Harvard for the second-consecutive season, defeated Brown for the first time in program history, and downed Navy for the third time as a program.
• The team's defense ranked eighth nationally with a goals against average of 9.86.
• In man-down defense, Holy Cross ranked ninth nationally (.727).
• Holy Cross finished the 2019 season in sixth place in the Patriot League.
 
Crusader Newcomers
TJ Lynch, Cameron Magalotti, and Konrad Knaus join the Crusaders' midfield.
Billy Carlini and Martin Folan join the long stick midfielders.
• On defense, Hayes Reding, Drew Leahy, and Bobby Bivona join.
• Thomas McIntrie, Jayce Lambert, Dean DiNanno, and DJ Kelly will join the Crusaders' attack.
 
Scouting Providence
• The Friars opened the 2020 season with a 12-5 victory over Boston University.
• Matt Grillo and Sean Leahy lead the Friars, each with four points. Grillo scored three goals and added an assist against the Terriers.
• Toby Burgdorf played in goal for a .667 save percentage with 10 saves.
• At faceoff, Providence played to a .286 winning percentage with RJ Romeo winning six of 19  faceoffs.
 
Up Next
• The Crusaders will open Kuzniewski Field on Feb. 15 at 1:05 p.m. when they host Vermont.
