Mullaney’s overtime goal sends men’s lacrosse past UMass Lowell, 13-12

WORCESTER, Mass.Jonathan Tesoro captured the program's all-time wins record at 19 as Sean Mullaney completed a hat trick to send the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team past UMass Lowell as time expired in overtime, 13-12. Kevin Kodzis led the Crusaders with five points from three goals and two assists.
 
Lowell took a 3-0 lead with 6:46 to play in the first quarter. At 3:04, Justin Lynskey triggered the Crusaders' offense to rattle off four goals before the quarter close. Lynskey scored twice in that time as Mullaney and Will Spangenberg added goals.
 
Kodzis put the Crusaders ahead 5-3 to start the second quarter before the River Hawks were able to stop the run. Through the second and third quarters, the Crusaders rattled off a second five-goal run, 10-4. 
 
In the 11th minute of the third quarter, the game saw three goals – two from Lowell and one from Dan O'Connell. Holy Cross held an 11-5 lead with 11 minutes to play in the third quarter. The River Hawks began their comeback, steadily scoring seven goals to knot things up at 12 to close regulation.
 
Holy Cross maintained much of the possession in the overtime period, but it was not until Mullaney sent a shot to the top corner of the net as time expired, 13-12, that the Crusaders captured the victory.
 
CRUSADER LEADERS:
  • Dan O'Connell tallied a career-high two goals.
  • Sean New picked up three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • O'Connell went 16-for-25 at the faceoff (.640). He also picked up a season-high nine ground balls.
 
NOTES & NUMBERS:
  • Holy Cross outshot Lowell, 43-34.
  • Jonathan Tesoro made seven saves.
  • The Crusaders held the edge in ground balls, 33-29.
