COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Holy Cross baseball team fell, 5-0, in a weather-shortened outing in its series finale at South Carolina on Sunday, Feb. 16.
The game was called after four-and-a-half innings due to rain and an unplayable field.
STATS LEADERS:
W: Brannon Jordan (1-0)
L:
Liam Dvorak (0-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Junior Cam Meyer had a leadoff single for the Crusaders (0-3), but after that hit, South Carolina (3-0) starter Brannon Jordan retired 13 straight Holy Cross batters.
- Holy Cross junior right-handed starter Liam Dvorak held the Gamecocks scoreless early, striking out three batters in the first inning and two more in the second.
- South Carolina was able to earn its first run of the game in the bottom of the third when Jeff Heinrich got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Gamecocks scored three more in the frame on an infield single, bases-loaded walk and another hit batter, before freshman righty Jack DiLauro drew a swinging strikeout to end the frame.
- The Gamecocks got a solo homer from Wes Clarke in the fourth, extending the lead to 5-0. With a runner on third and two outs, junior left fielder Evan Blum had a diving catch with a runner on third to prevent another run.
- In the top of the fifth, freshman second baseman Ben Dellacono gave the Crusaders their first baserunner since the first when he hit a double to left field. He advanced to third on a wild pitch, but Jordan drew a lineout and a strikeout to keep Holy Cross off the board.
- Following a 30-minute rain delay entering the bottom of the fifth, the game was called.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Both of Dellacono's collegiate hits have been extra-base hits: a home run on Saturday and a double on Sunday.
- Dvorak has recorded five or more strikeouts in 15 of his 29 career appearances.
DUE UP:
